Job Hazard Analysis (JHA)

 

A JHA is a written document that sets out the high risk work activities to be carried out at a workplace, the hazards and risks arising from these activities and the measures to be put in place to control the risks.

It focuses on the job steps. The potential hazards associated in undertaking the job steps, and the hazard control measures required to eliminate the risk of injury, or reduce to an acceptable risk level.

Its primary purpose is to help supervisors and workers implement and monitor the control measures established at the workplace to ensure high risk work is carried out safely.  

Everyone involved in implementing a job or task should be present when the JHA is written! The JHA should be reviewed, approved, and signed by the supervisor before the task is started. Understanding every job step is very important! Whenever a job step changes or a new step is introduced, the JHA must be reviewed and updated.

The key reasons for completing a JHA are to encourage teamwork (especially with new employees), to involve everyone performing the job in the process, and to elevate awareness!

A Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) Must:

1. specify hazards relating to the work to be undertaken and risks to health and safety associated with those hazards; and
2. describe the measures to be implemented to control the risks; and
3. describe how the control measures are to be implemented, monitored and reviewed
4. be prepared taking into account all relevant matters including
   1. circumstances at the workplace that may affect the way in which the job task is carried out
   2. be set out and expressed in a way that is readily accessible and understandable to persons who use it
